Wageningen IMARES specializes in strategic ans applied marine ecological research. Products and services include field studies, real-life scale experiments, exploratory studies at the laboratory level, data management and modelling. The field of work comprises: ecology, marine fisheries, environment and aquaculture.

Wageningen IMARES undertakes fundamental and applied research on the entire fish production chain: from fish to dish. The field of work includes the sea, the inshore and inland waters, auctions, fish farms, processing plants and retail outlets. The total staff of IMARES is 170 persons strong, of whom 15 are working in the field of shellfish research located in Yerseke. 95% of the Dutch mussel industry is based, including ships, processing plants, distribution centres and a special auction for bivalves in the Yerseke area.

IMARES is already involved for more than 30 years in mussel research, and is the only research institute in the Netherlands with in depth knowledge of the blue mussel sector. IMARES monitors the size of shellfish populations in coastal and estuarine waters, predicts seed production, monitors algal blooms and quality of mussels, predicts production based on the food availability, and provides advice to the mussel industry.

Dr. Pauline Kamermans, project coordinator and responsible person within BLUE SEED, has 17 years experience in marine ecological research of which 11 years were devoted to shellfish. She has been working for the research centre in Yerseke since 2000, where she carried out a number of projects on the enhancement of seed supply for the bottom culture of M. edulis. She has participated as a researcher and assistant coordinator in two EU projects (EUMAC EV5V-CT93-0290 and GROFLO ERBIC18CT960065).
